Is The Season Over Yet?

No, I’m not talking about the NFL. That we know has a limited engagement. I’m talking about all the sports in which my grandchildren participate.  Here was my weekend and I’m sure many of you experience the same thing. Saturday morning 8 year old Jack had a football game at 9:00 a.m. It was raining and cold but the coaches were determined to get the game in.  At 11:00 a.m. 6 year old Tori had her final soccer playoff. The rain had stopped, the cold had not and Tori playing goal tender politely kicked the ball into the net for the other team.  At 1:00 p.m. Ben, our very athletic 9 year old, had a football game which was played in the mud.  I had to keep asking where Ben was because his jersey number was unreadable. Jack’s team tied and the game was finally called because of the rain.  Tori’s team tied but then they always do – something about teaching them how to play and not win or lose.  I’m not sure these young children will be able to handle defeat when it faces them.  Ben’s team won.  At 6:0 p.m. our 13 year old Sophia played in the grand prix tennis match and tied for 1st place.  There was a playoff and she came in second.  By 8 p.m. I felt as if I had run a marathon.  Of course, none of these games took place at the same location.  Sunday morning came bright and early as I drove 45 miles to attend a special grandparents Mass with Abigail who is 7, Vincie who is 5 and Kate who is 2.  When I arrived home at noon, I quickly made lunch for my own football fan who doesn’t mind being left home alone in peace and quiet on Sundays.  Did I mention that 18 of our grandhildren live next door to us?  I missed 10 year old Emma and 11 year old Grace’s volleyball games but there is always next week.  At 3:00 p.m. another football game for the grammar school championship.  Here is where I can “kill three birds with one stone”.  Nick (Sophia’s twin brother), Mac (also 13 and the quarterback for the team) and Sam (Mac’s brother who is 12) all play on the same team.  My daughter is the team photographer and my son-in-law the coach so I had the added job of keeping track of Graham (6) and Charlie (4) plus their cousin Nicholas (4 also).  The Chicago Bears lost that Sunday 45 to 10 but the St. Joan Chargers won in over time 14 to 12 and Mac threw the touchdown pass and had the quaretback sneak for the 2 points.  My football fan was not happy when I got home for dinner but I was on cloud nine.  What a great weekened.  I even had time to clean up my vegetable garden.
